GUIDELINES FOR ADOPTING A GSP PUPPY

1. Having experience as a GSP owner is a major advantage. A German
Shorthaired Pointer is not a breed for everyone. Having a GSP is not at all like
having a Golden Retriever or a Lab. Owners who have adult GSPs know they
can be a challenge many days. Puppies are a challenge every day!

2. You need another active dog for the puppy to have as a mentor and playmate. Although small breeds are delightful and great fun, they generally do not provide enough exercise for the extremely active GSP puppy. Nor does a senior dog who is no longer actively playing and running. Another dog, a mentor/buddy dog, not only provides playtime for the puppy but also helps train him or her and is there to show the puppy the ropes about acceptable dog behavior.

3. You need to be around for the puppy for at least part of the day, not just when
you come home for lunch or after being gone for a typical 8-hour work day.
An adopter needs to be available to potty train and create a bond with the
pup. Because puppies have tiny bladders they need to go outdoors as often as
every two hours. The first few months are the most important for the puppy
to bond with his or her owner which requires the two of them to spend a lot of
quality time together. Having a GSP puppy is a major time and energy commitment.

4. Every active GSP needs daily exercise and consistent training, possibly on
an e-collar. GSPs are one of the sporting breeds and they need more exercise
than you can probably imagine. Playing in the backyard and visits to a dog
park a few times a week are not enough exercise for GSPs, especially not
enough for a young dog once he or she is more than a year old. As with almost
any GSP, a 6 ft. fence is usually required especially because of their prey drive.
Exercise for puppies, however, needs to be regulated. They aren’t physically
ready for vigorous or extensive exercise until they are at least 12 months old.

5. Most GSP’s are very prey-driven and, given the opportunity and training, may
want to hunt. An adopter of a puppy needs to be prepared for that possibility.

*Potential adopters who meet these guidelines will have preference in adopting one
of the puppies coming to us in April.

Bella

We have sad news today. BELLA, one of our lovely owner surrenders who many of you are familiar with if you’ve visited our website, was euthanized by her long-time owners on February 28. She was diagnosed a short time ago with a very large abdominal tumor, possibly due to hemangiosarcoma, such a deadly and fast-moving cancer. Her owners wanted to keep Bella with them and eventually chose to let this sweet girl go peacefully. We were so sorry that we weren’t able to find just the right family for Bella who did need a very special home. But fate kept her where she belonged, with the family she loved and trusted, until her last days. Many hugs and our warmest thoughts are with Dave and Jennifer and we wish for a gentle, loving passage to the Rainbow Bridge for dear Bella.

Please consider this when you make your decision whether or not to bring your dog.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to email us at milehighgsp@gmail.com, call 720.373.7274 or reach out to us through Facebook. Thank you for helping to support our rescue and save GSPs in need. We hope to see you there!

Cody and Cora: a very sweet bonded pair!

UPDATE 3/24/16: Cody and Cora have found a foster family! Thank you everyone for helping to share them!

A wonderful bonded pair needs our help. Cody is a Pointer/Lab mix and Cora is a purebred, white and black GSP. Both of the pups are 1 to 1-1/2 years old; neither is a large dog. They are neutered/spayed and have all their basic shots. These two were picked up as strays in Oklahoma by a woman who is now fostering them until they can find a home together. They are extremely bonded – cuddling, playing, staying close to each other. This temporary foster mom says they are two of the sweetest, most adorable dogs she’s fostered in a long time and they obviously depend on each other. We would love to bring them to Mile High GSP Rescue to be fostered or adopted but we need a place for them. If you feel you can help Cora and Cody by adopting or fostering, keeping them together, please call Judy at 720-373-7274. Thank you so much! Read more →

Temp foster home needed ASAP for sweet senior GSP

We have an unusual need for a temporary foster mom, dad or couple. We took Quincy into our rescue just a few weeks ago. He is 10 – 12 years old and came to us in pretty rough shape. He either escaped from his home or was cast out. What is very clear is that before finding his own way to what became a temporary foster home in Kansas, he had clearly been badly neglected.
